Surakarta Mayor Gibran Rakabuming Raka avoided mounting pressure to withdraw as a vice-presidential candidate due to a “legally, morally and ethically flawed” process, with the General Election Commission (GEC) confirming he is eligible to compete in next year’s race.
The KPU endorsement caps a week of hectic efforts to defeat the candidacy of President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo’s eldest son, who will act as his father’s proxy as presidential hopeful Prabowo Subiantu’s vice-presidential candidate.
KPU commissioner Idham Holik said at a press conference on Monday that all three pairs of presidential candidates, including Prabowo and Gibran, have met all the requirements to participate in the 2024 presidential election.
